Achilles Tendinopathy
Achilles Tendinopathy/Tendinitis is an overuse injury of the Achilles tendon which is formed by the calf muscle and inserts into the back of the heel. Overuse usually occurs due to a sudden increase/change in activity, inadequate rest between activities or a change in footwear. Flat feet, tightness or weakness of the calf muscles can predispose.
Common symptoms include a gradual increase in pain and complaints of morning stiffness. Pain usually diminishes with walking, during activity or by applying heat however it will return shortly after in most cases. It is mostly seen in people participating in sports that include explosive movements such as running, jumping and changing of direction.
Treatment can include:
RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression Elevation)
Change in footwear
Change or decrease in activity and load
Strengthening
Orthotics/heel inserts for footwear
Stretching
Shockwave Therapy
Achilles tendinopathy can be a long term injury, however if diagnosed early and treated well by you and your My Virtual Podiatrist symptoms should cease after approximately 6 weeks.
